King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima host the annual Koningsdagconcert (King’s Day Concert) at the Theater aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht on April 11th, to honour those involved in the organization of Koningsdag in Maastricht. The Concert is held ahead of the annual Koningsdag (King’s Day) Celebrations on April 27th, which will be in Maastricht this year, and the first time the Concert has been held since 2019, due to the Pandemic.

This year’s King’s Day Concert is all about the sounds of the city of Maastricht and its cultural environment. In collaboration with the South Netherlands Philharmonic and Opera Zuid, the program was compiled with contributions from cellist Eline Hensels, violinist Liza Ferschtman, carillonneur Frank Steijns and pianist brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen, who performed works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Ysaye, Saint-Saëns and Leo Smit. Composer and conductor Leonard Evers composed a song cycle for the concert based on texts by Maastricht poets. On the arrival of the Royal Couple, the Royal Harmony Sainte Cécile from Eijsden performed a serenade.

The Koningsdagconcert will be broadcast on the evening of April 27 on NPO 2.
