A 5-strand Pearl Necklace with a cabochon sapphire and diamond clasp, this splendid jewel originates with Princess Birgitta’s mother, Princess Sibylla of Sweden, who used to wear the clasp with smaller rows of pearls in the 1940s and early 1950s, before adding it to longer 5-strands of pearls. The Pearls were given to Princess Sibylla by King Gustav V and had belonged to his wife, Queen Victoria, who had willed them to her grandson, Prince Lennart’s future bride if she was royal (she was not), and otherwise, they remained with the Royal Family. Notable appearences of the 5-strand Pearl Necklace came at the future King Carl XVI Gustaf’s graduation, the Wedding of Prince Juan Carlos of Spain and Princess Sophia of Greece in 1962, and the Wedding of her daughter, Princess Désirée of Sweden, in 1964.

After Princess Sibylla’s death in 1972, her 5-strand Pearl Necklace with the cabochon sapphire clasp was inherited by her second daughter, Princess Birgitta of Sweden and Hohenzollern, who was notably pictured wearing the necklace for the Wedding of her brother, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, in 1976. The 5-strand Pearl Necklace featured in a segment of a German show that Princess Birgitta stared in 1989, when it was shown in detail, before it appears that the cabochon sapphire clasp was removed and put on a single strand of pearls by the mid-1990s, when it was pictured on Princess Birgitta.

In 1990, Princess Birgitta’s only daughter, Princess Désirée of Hohenzollern, had worn the 5-strand Pearl Necklace with the cabochon sapphire clasp with Princess Birgitta’s Pearl Circle Tiara  for her Wedding to Hereditary Count Heinrich Franz Josef of Ortenburg, and in recent years Princess Désirée has been the main wearer of the current necklace with the cabochon sapphire clasp, which was notably worn to the Wedding of Prince Carl Philip in 2015. There is no doubt we will continue to see this Royal Heirloom for years to come!
