Nobel Prize 2021

The Swedish and Norwegian Royal Families have been presiding over the annual Nobel Prize and Nobel Peace Prize Ceremonies in Stockholm and Oslo today, after a break last year due to the Pandemic. This year’s ceremonies are much reduced than usual, without the glittering Banquets, so instead of having two separate articles, we are compiling both Ceremonies into one article!

King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway were joined by Crown Prince Haakon for the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony at the Oslo City Hall, which is awarded by the Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. This year’s Prize was given to journalists Dmitrij Muratov and Maria Ressa for ‘their fights to defend freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia.’ and they were received by the Royal Family at the Royal Palace of Oslo ahead of the Ceremony.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden (wearing King Carl Gustaf’s Portrait Brooch) were joined by Crown Princess Victoria (wearing King Carl Gustaf’s Portrait Brooch) and Prince Daniel for the Nobel Prize Ceremony in the Blue Hall at the Stockholm City Hall, where the Banquet is usually held. Instead of the Prizes being awarded by the King, the Laureates were presented with their Nobel Prizes in their home countries ahead of time, with content filmed for the digital ceremony. The Nobel Prize Festivities has been cancelled only a handful of times in the past, in 1907, 1924,1956 and during the First and Second World Wars.

  1. Well, this was interesting. The ceremony in Norway looked pretty much the same as always since they don’t have a gala presentation, but the event in Sweden was quite different. It’s definitely better than having it virtually or not having it at all, but I certainly miss all the pomp and circumstance surrounding the prizes. The recipients are special people indeed and I hope they don’t feel too disappointed that their ceremony was such a pared down affair. At least it took place and everyone’s work was acknowledged. Next year, it’ll hopefully be back in form!
