Dutch State Visits to Germany

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands are embarking on their State Visit to Germany tomorrow, over a year after it was delayed due to the pandemic, so we are featuring a look at previous Dutch State Visits to Germany, celebrating the close relationship between the two neighbouring countries!

The Netherlands’ close ties with Germany is reflected in their Royal Family. Queen Máxima is only one of two Dutch Royal Consorts who is/was not German, as were Queen Emma, Prince Henrik, Prince Bernhard, and Prince Claus. were Due to the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands during the Second World War, there was some controversy when Princess Beatrix married Claus Van Amsberg in 1966, but he later became one of the most popular members of the Royal Family.

Queen Wilhelmina visited Germany numerous times, especially after marrying Duke Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1901, and after hosting him for a State Visit in 1907, later welcomed Kaiser Wilhelm II in exile. Her daughter, Queen Juliana married Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, and they both went on a State Visit to Germany in 1971, the highlight of which was a Banquet in honour of the Queen (in the Diamond Bandeau) at the Augustusburg Palace in Brühl.

Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus were hosted by President and Mrs Carstens on their State Visit to West Germany in 1982, with another Banquet in honour of the Queen (wearing the Mellerio Ruby Tiara) at the Augustusburg Palace. Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus made another visit, this time to a unified Germany, in 1991.

In 2011, Queen Beatrix (wearing the Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara) was joined by the Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima (in the Diamond Bandeau) as they were hosted by President and Mrs Wulff on their State Visit to Germany in 2011, with a Banquet at the Bellevue Presidential Palace, as well as a Return Concert at the Berlin Philharmonic.

While this will be their first State Visit to Germany, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima have made numerous ‘Regional Working Visits’ to Germany, like the States of Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt in 2017, and the German Federal States of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland in 2018. They also hosted a Dinner for German President Joachim Gauck and his partner, Daniela Schadt, at Noordeinde Palace in 2017.
