King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden launched their Silver Anniversary Celebrations with a splendid Renaissance-inspired Costume Gala at Gripsholm Castle on this day in 2001, on the eve of their Silver Wedding Anniversary. The evening began with a Gala Performance in Gustav III’s Theater followed by a Dala Dinner in the Rikshall.

In addition to the extended Swedish Royal Family, Royal Guests and Relatives (pictured) included Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark, King Harald, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette Marit and Princess Martha Louise of Norway, Queen Beatrix, the Prince of Orange, Princess Maxima, Prince Constantjin and Princess Laurentien of The Netherlands, King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie of Greece, Crown Prince Felipe of Spain, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa of Luxembourg, Prince Albert of Monaco, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, and Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia.

  1. What a fantastic event. I also love that everyone but Queen Magrethe looks like they’re wearing a costume (appropriate since it’s a costume gala), while Queen Magrethe looks just dressed up; she is so well suited to these sort of styles. She’s my favorite of the whole bunch!
