Christening of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, 1946

The Christening of Prince Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus of Sweden, the Duke of Jämtland, son of Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden, Duke of Västerbotten and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, into the Church of Sweden by the Archbishop of Uppsala, Erling Eidem in the Chapel of the Royal Palace of Stockholm on this day in 1946, celebrating the long-awaited Heir who is now the longest-reigning King in Swedish History.

The future King’s godparents were his uncle and aunt, King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid of Denmark; Queen Juliana of the Netherlands; King Olav V of Norway,  Friedrich Josias, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; paternal great-grandfather, King Gustaf V; grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolph; step-grandmother, Queen Louise of Sweden; Countess Maria Bernadotte of Wisborg; and Count Folke Bernadotte.

  1. I just love how the Swedish Royals were not afraid to “pile up” the Order Collars! It must have been rather heavy though, as this is all made of metal of course. So probably not very comfortable, but oh, so very impressive 🙂

  2. That is such a special photograph! It’s not often that a monarch can pose with three of his descendants in the direct line. Queen Victoria of the UK had one such photo with the future kings Edward VII, George V, and Edward VIII. And Queen Elizabeth II also of the UK was able to do the same not too long ago with Princes Charles, William, and George. It was just too sad that Prince Gustaf Adolf died so young.

  3. That is very true. As people tend to live longer these days maybe it will be more common, but certainly in the past it has not been very often that that could happen. It has, however, happened previously also in Sweden. There is a lovely photograph of King Oscar II with his son Gustav V, his grandson Gustav VI Adolf and his great-grandson Gustav Adolf who sadly didn’t live long enough to succeed his father.
I suspect that this photo was taken at some point during the celebration of Gustaf Adolf’s christening in 1906. A link to the photo (which I hope works):
