Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko in Spain, 1985

The Spanish Royal Family hosted Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko of Japan on their Official Visit to Spain on this day in 1985, the highlight was the State Banquet hosted by King Juan Carlos (wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of the Chrysanthemum) and Queen Sofia (in the Mellerio Shell Tiara and the Order of the Precious Crown) in honour of the Crown Prince (wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of the Chrysanthemum) and Crown Princess (wearing the Pearl Sunburst Tiara and the Order of Isabella the Catholic) at the Royal Palace of Madrid. Infanta Cristina (in the Prussian Diamond Tiara and the Order of Isabella the Catholic) was also present.

Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko also hosted a Return Dinner at the Prado Museum in Madrid. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia went on a State Visit to Japan in 1980, the Spanish Royal Family hosted the Imperial Couple on a State Visit in 1994, and King Felipe and Queen Letizia made a State Visit to Japan in 2017.
