Spanish State Visit to Japan, 1980

The Japanese Imperial Family hosted King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain on their State Visit to Japan on this day in 1980, which began with an Official Welcome from Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako at the Imperial Palace, and a State Banquet hosted by the Emperor (wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece) in honour of the King (in the Order of the Chrysanthemum) and Queen (wearing the Mellerio Shell Tiara and the Order of the Precious Crown). Crown Prince Akihito (in the Order of Charles III) and Crown Princess Michiko (wearing the Diamond Scroll Tiara and Order of Isabella the Catholic), Prince and Princess Hitachi, Princess Chichibu and Princess Takamatsu were also present.

Following a series of engagements, which included a Dinner with the Crown Princely Family, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia (wearing the Floral Tiara) hosted a Return Banquet at the Akasaka Imperial Palace for the Japanese Imperial Family, which included Emperor Hirohito, Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko (in the Pearl Sunburst Tiara), Prince and Princess Hitachi, Princess Chichibu and Princess Takamatsu. The King and Queen made another State Visit to Japan in 2008 and King Felipe and Queen Letizia made a State Visit to Japan in 2017.
