State Opening of Parliament, 1960

The Queen (wearing the Imperial State Crown with the Order of the Garter) presided over the State Opening of Parliament in the Chamber of the House of Lords at the Palace of Westminster on this day in 1960, delivering her traditional speech from the Throne.

The Duke of Edinburgh (wearing the Order of the Garter), the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (in the Iveagh Tiara), Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent (wearing the Cambridge Sapphire Parure), and Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone (wearing her Diamond Palmette Tiara) were also present alongside a plethora of glittering Peeresses, including the Duchess of Fife (wearing Queen Victoria’s Emerald Tiara), the Duchess of Rutland (in the Rutland Tiara), the Duchess of Buccleuch (wearing the Buccleuch Turquoise Parure), the Marchioness of Cholmondeley (wearing the French Sapphire Parure) and the Countess of Waldegrave (in the Waldegrave Tiara).
