Liechtenstein State Visit to the Vatican, 1960

Prince Franz Josef II (wearing the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein) and Princess Gina of Liechtenstein (wearing her Diamond Choker Bandeau and the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein) have an Audience with Pope John XXIII at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City during their State Visit to the Vatican on this day in 1960, just a week after the Thai State Visit to the Vatican. The State Visit to the Vatican was one of few State Visits undertaken by the Prince Family in their time as Sovereigns of the Principality.

  1. As one of the few remaining Catholic sovereigns, I’m surprised to see that Princess Gina did not have the “privilege du blanc”. I know the Spanish and Belgian queens have always used it as well as the Luxembourg Grand Duchesses. However, I remember that Princess Grace did not use it, but then Princess Charlene did. I guess they have to be designated as such by the Pope?

  2. I investigated a bit and it turns out that Pope Benedict XVI was the one who included the Princess Charlene in the privilege. I think Pope Francis would do well to include Princess Marie in the privilege du blanc. She’s one of the few Catholic sovereigns left!
