King Leopold III (wearing the Royal Victorian Order) and Queen Astrid of Belgium (in Queen Elisabeth’s Diamond Bandeau) host a Gala Dinner in honour of the Official Visit of the Duke (wearing the Order of Leopold) and Duchess of York (in her Turquoise Tiara and Parure) to Brussels at the Royal Castle of Laeken on this day in 1935, to attend the 1935 Brussels International Exposition.

The King and Queen had opened the International Exposition a few weeks previously, and were also joined her sister and brother-in-law, Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha of Norway, to visit the Norwegian Pavilion. These were some of Queen Astrid’s final engagements before her death in a tragic car crash the following month.

  1. Incredible to think that such a lovely and young woman, Queen Astrid, would die so soon after these photos. Little did they know about that then, nor of the many more changes that followed in the few months ahead, including the abdication of Edward VIII and the Duke and Duchess of York becoming King and Queen. Here they are, frozen in time, looking so happy and elegant. I love your posts of times gone by!
