Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna, Princess Nicholas of Greece

Today marks the anniversary of the birth of Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna / Princess Nicholas of Greece, who was born on this day in 1882. The only daughter of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia and Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, she grew up in the midst of mass grandeur in Romanov Russia. In 1902, Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna married Prince Nicholas of Greece, the son of King George I of Greece and Grand Duchess Olga Constantinovna of Russia. Prince and Princess Nicholas of Greece had three daughter; Princess Paul of YugoslaviaPrincess Marina, Duchess of Kent, and Princess Elisabeth, Countess of Törring-Jettenbach, and resided in Athens until 1917, when they went into exile in France, living in reduced circumstances funded by the sale of some of her jewels and Prince Nicholas’ paintings, until they returned to Greece in 1935. After Prince Nicholas’ death in 1938, the Grand Duchess remained in Athens throughout the Second World War, with her sister-in-law, Princess Alice, and remained an active member of the Greek Royal Family up until her death in 1957, bequeathing her personal library to the Anavryta School.
