Happy Birthday to Infanta Margarita, Duchess of Soria and Hernani, who turns 80 today! The third child and younger daughter of the Count of Barcelona and Princess María de las Mercedes of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, she was born in Rome where the Spanish Royal Family resided in exile, and grew up in Portugal. The Infanta has been blind since birth. In 1972, she married physician Carlos Zurita y Delgado, now Duke of Soria and Hernani, and the couple have two children. Three years later, her brother became King Juan Carlos of Spain. In 1981, Infanta Margarita inherited the Dukedom of Hernani from a distant cousin and was also made the Duchess of Soria for life. The Duke and Duchess head the Fundación Cultural Duques de Soria, Duke and Duchess of Soria Cultural Foundation, and she is also Honorary President of Madrid’s delegation of UNICEF and the Spanish Heart Foundation. Infanta Margarita is also present at many family events, most notably the Order of the Golden Fleece Ceremony at the Royal Palace of Madrid last year. I wish HRH a very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!

The Infanta is a beautiful and talented woman who has not allowed what some would call a “disability” to prevent her from living a very full life. She is an inspiration! Happy Birthday!
