The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are starting their Visit to the Commonwealth Nation of Fiji today, and thus, we are taking a look at some, if not all, of the previous Royal Visits to Fiji.

On of the first visits by members of the Royal Family, the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) visited the Fiji Islands during a larger tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1927. They were welcomed at the traditional Veirqaraqaravi Vakavanua ceremony also attended by Ratu E. Seniloli, the grandson of the late King Cakobau.

The Queen has visited Fiji in 1953 and 1963 when it was a Crown Colony, and in 1970, 1973, 1977, and 1982 as the Queen of the Dominion of Fiji. Major visits included the 1953-1954 Commonwealth Tour, more on that visit HERE, and the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Tour in 1977. Fiji is the only country where the Queen was violently overthrown in a coup.

After he granted Independence to Fiji in 1970, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited Fiji twice in 1985, between Royal Visits to Australia and the United States, both visits covered HERE. The Duke of York also visited in 1998, after Fiji had rejoined the Commonwealth the previous years.
