Happy Birthday to Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, who turns 82 today! The eldest son of Prince George, Duke of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece, he is a first-cousin of the Queen. Prince Edward has a younger sister, Princess Alexandra, and brother, Prince Michael, who was only 8 weeks old when their father died in a plane crash in 1942, during WWII. Educated in England and Switzerland, Prince Edward served in the Army for 21 years. In 1961, he married Katherine Worsley at York Minster. The Duke and Duchess of Kent have three children and ten grandchildren. The couple have quietly supported the Queen for the past six decades, until the Duchess retired from duties in the early 2000s. However, the Duke continues to undertake duties, and most notably serves as President of The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, in which role he presents the champion’s trophies at Wimbledon each year. I wish HRH a very Happy Birthday and many Happy Returns.
