Queen at Canada House

Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Edinburgh visited Canada House on Trafalgar Square in London on July 19th to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. In honour of the celebrations, the Queen released a video message, a photo, and met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau while the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall visited Canada earlier this month for Canada Day.

On arrival, the Queen and Duke were met by the Governor General, Viceregal Consort, and the Canadian High Commissioner. They then viewed artefacts and displays celebrating Canada 150, including items from the Royal Archives and from the National Maritime Museum’s exhibition Death in the Ice, which explores Sir John Franklin’s final Arctic expedition. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh also met guests before viewing a short performance and the presentation of a 150th Anniversary of Confederation gift, a photo book, to the Governor General. The Queen was presented with the Sapphire Jubilee Snowflake Brooch. After signing the visitors’ book, the royal couple unveiled a new Jubilee Walkway Panel outside Canada House.

The Queen wore a white jacket with a blue floral skirt and . blue hat, pairing her customary Three Strand Pearl Necklace with her famous Canadian Maple Leaf Brooch. For the audience on the 18th, the Queen wore Maria Feodorovna’s Sapphire Brooch.

  1. Oh, my goodness! What a beautiful brooch! I love the design and the ombré effect created with the sapphires and the diamonds. I think this may be the second brooch the Canadians have gifted the Queen. I think she was wearing the Maple Leaf diamond brooch, but I believe that was given to the Queen Mother and not to her directly. The Queen has a Modern Tourmaline brooch given to her in Saskatchewan not too long ago and now she has this one. I like the tourmaline brooch, but this one is magnificent! I’ll bet she wanted to try it on immediately, and it would have matched her outfit, but that would have probably set an unwanted precedent. But maybe she’ll wear it soon, perhaps for her Christmas broadcast. 🙂
