Queen Fabiola of Belgium, aunt of King Philippe, was born on this day in 1928. Born Doña Fabiola Fernanda Maria de las Victorias Antonia Adelaïda de Mora y Aragón, she was the sixth child of Spanish Aristocrats Gonzalo de Mora y Fernández, Riera y del Olmo, 4th Marquess of Casa Riera, 2nd Count of Mora and his wife Blanca de Aragón y Carrillo de Albornoz, Barroeta-Aldamar y Elío. Trained as a nurse, she worked in a Madrid hospital and was fluent in six languages: Spanish, French, Dutch, English, German and Italian, as well as the author of a children’s book. In 1960, she married King Baudouin of the Belgians. Unfortunately, the couple lost five children to miscarriages and eventually had no children. After the King’s death in 1993, he was succeeded by his younger brother. Despite taking a background role during the reigns of her brother-in-law and nephew, Queen Fabiola remained the matriarch of the family. She died in 2014, at her home Stuyvenberg Castle, and is buried with her husband.
