King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 60th Birthday

King Harald and Queen Sonja will be celebrating their 80th Birthday’s in a grand celebration next week in Oslo. Click HERE to read about the events and the guest list. In honour of the occasion, we are flashing back to King Harald’s previous birthday celebrations. Click HERE to the celebrations for his 21st Birthday, HERE to the celebrations for his 40th Birthday. In 1997, like this year, King Harald and Queen Sonja decided to combine their birthday celebrations, which included a gala dinner, variety performance, and a cruise on the royal yacht for the royal family and their foreign royal guests. Take a look below at the fashion from the events.

Gala Dinner at the Royal Residence Stiftgarden in Trondheim- June 20, 1997

On June 20th, King Harald and Queen Sonja hosted a Gala Dinner at the Royal Residence Stiftgarden in Trondheim for their foreign royal guests. Click HERE to see more pictures.

Queen Sonja wore her favourite yellow gown (still worn today) with the Amethyst Parure necklace, earrings, and bracelets (possibly for the first time). King Harald and Crown Prince Haakon wore Black Tie. Princess Martha Louise wore a lime green, turquoise, and brown dress (how did she even think that would look good?) with pearl earrings.

Queen Margrethe of Denmark wore an oft-repeated (one of my favourites) mauve and silver gown with a diamond riviere and earrings. Prince Henrik (displaying his usual sartorial flair) wore black tie with a (very dapper) white jacket. Crown Prince Frederik (what’s with that hair?) and Prince Joachim (hair on point) wore Black Tie. Princess Alexandra (Joachim’s now ex-wife) wore a purple silk gown with a simple necklace and earrings.

Queen Silvia of Sweden wore a black and white one-shouldered gown with pearls (and a dramatic cape). King Carl Gustaf (does that man ever smile? Is he trying to copy Victoria Beckham’s pout?) wore Black tie. Crown Princess Victoria (looking perfectly lovely) wore a pink gown with her multi-gemstone necklace.

The Norwegian Royal Family also waved to the crowds from the balcony of the Royal Residence.

Queen Sonja wore a pale blue gown with the full version of Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara, pearl earrings, a couple of strands of pearls, and the Draper’s Company Brooch (in what is one of my favourite looks ever). Princess Martha Louise wore floral blue gown with her 18th Birthday Tiara, pearl earrings, and a pearl choker (typical 90s is all I have to say). King Harald (tired already, poor guy) and Crown Prince Haakon (dat hair tho) wore White Tie with medals and honours. All four wore the highest Norwegian order, the Order of St. Olav.

Queen Silvia of Sweden wore a green lace and ivory silk gown (another lovely look) with the Cut Steel Tiara, diamond riviere, floral earrings, and a floral brooch. King Carl Gustaf (again, see what I mean about the smile above!) wore White Tie with medals and honours Both wore the Norwegian Order of St. Olav

The Prince of Wales (recently divorced from Diana) wore White Tie with medals and honours and the Norwegian Order of St. Olav. Crown Prince (now King) Felipe of Spain (so young) wore White Tie with medals and honours and the Norwegian Order of St. Olav

The Earl of Wessex was also present (strangely in Black Tie, didn’t he read the invitation?). Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden (with Princess Leia hair) wore a green gown.

P.S.- Getty labeled this photo from the variety performance, but I’m not so sure. What do you guys think?

Prince Joachim (also in Black Tie) and Princess Alexandra (looking quite lovely but dated) were also there.

Queen Margretha of Denmark (in traditional dress so no salty comment about the headgear, sadly) and Queen Sonja of Norway.

King Juan Carlos of Spain, Queen Silvia of Sweden (looking lovelier in traditional dress than her Danish cousin), and Queen Sofia of Spain (it was June and she’s wearing a Christmas sweater, no more comment needed).

Princess Benedikte of Denmark (don’t understand the yellow, but it works)

Princess Martha Louise (look at those shoes) and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway.

Crown Princess Victoria (love the little pouch hanging from the side) and then Crown Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands (ugly Christmas sweaters must have been all the rage that summer, see Haakon and Sofia above for further evidence)

Then Crown Prince Felipe of Spain (looking suave) with his (soon to be jailed) brother-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin.

  1. The article failed to mention that Prince Felipe was also wearing the necklace insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
