Today marks 20 years since the death of Prince Bertil of Sweden, who died on this day in 1997. Prince Bertil was the uncle of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Anne Marie of Greece. To honour his memory, we will flashback to his Wedding on December 7th, 1976, to Lilian Craig, his lover for over 34 years by that time. Prince Bertil had met Lilian in the 1940s, but didn’t marry her in order to preserve his place in the line of succession, in case his nephew, Carl Gustav, came to throne before reaching the age of majority. Prince Bertil and Lilian finally married in December 1976, eventually becoming surrogate grandparents for the children of King Carl XVI Gustav and Queen Silvia of Sweden. He died in 19917. Princess Lilian continued to attend Royal Events until 2010. She died in 2013.
