Created by Van Cleef & Arpels around 1960, of white and yellow diamonds set in a traditional Thai style, a book on Van Cleef and Arpels relates that the large yellow diamonds in the centre were not sent to Paris and instead zircons of the exact size were forwarded to enable the mounting to be made precisely. The large large yellow diamonds were only set when the Tiara arrived in Thailand. The yellow diamond and floral motif can also be removed from the frame, to be worn as a bandeau, necklace, or bracelet.

Queen Sirikit frequently wore her Van Cleef & Arpels Thai Tiara during the 1960s and 70s for ceremonial occasions, State Visits, and official portraits, most notably on the landmark Tour of Europe in 1960, though appearences have declined since the 1970s, with some of the final occasions including the Iranian State Visit to Thailand in 1968 and the British State Visit to Thailand in 1972.

Queen Sirikit loaned her Van Cleef & Arpels Thai Tiara to Princess Bejaratana, a cousin of King Bhumibol Adulyadej,  a few times in the 1960s, along with the Thai Diamond Fringe. Queen Sirikit seems to have given the Van Cleef & Arpels Thai Tiara to her former daughter-in-law (and niece), Princess Soamsawali, at some point in the late 1970s or early 1980s, as she was photographed wearing it on a handful of occasions ahead of her divorce in 1991.

  1. This tiara was not created by Van Cleef and Arpels. This tiara has been in the Thai Royal family for the past century and probably from Queen Saovabha Phongsri collection. The one that mentions in a book of Van Cleef and Arpels is a difference tiara.

    1. A similar tiara may have come from Queen Saovabha Phongsri but this piece is from Van Cleef and Arpels because it was featured, with designs, in a book on the jewellery house. Also, when the Tiara has been exhibited, the maker has been noted as Van Cleef and Arpels and the creation date has been given as 1960. I’d be grateful if you could share the source of your information.
