There is usually a significant royal attendance at the Olympics, at London 2012, most of the monarchs brought their children and grandchildren, but for Rio 2016, only a few countries are represented by their royal families. They are sent to support and cheer on their countries teams. The Royals attended the Opening Ceremony on August 5, and then attended a reception for heads of state and government representatives.
For the Opening Ceremony and reception, the Danish Royals were the most well represented, with Crown Prince Couple and Prince Joachim’s family attending. The Princess Royal represents Great Britain, while Prince Albert II represents Monaco. King William Alexander is attending on behalf of the Netherlands, with Grand Duke Henri attending for Luxembourg. King Philipe and Queen Mathilde are representing Belgium.
