The Princess Royal celebrates her 70th Birthday this week! Featuring a large sapphire surrounded by twelve large diamonds, Princess Anne’s Sapphire Brooch is a smaller replica of Prince Albert’s Sapphire Brooch, and is possibly one of the similar brooches commissioned by Prince Albert for his daughters or another sapphire brooch given to Queen Victoria from Prince Albert in 1845. Little is known about the Brooch before it began to be worn by Princess Anne in the 1980s, thought to have been a gift from the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh around her 30th Birthday.

Princess Anne has worn her Sapphire Brooch for a plethora of daytime and evening occasions, including her 50th birthday, often paired with another important royal heirloom, Empress Maria Feodorovna’s Sapphire Choker, and it is still worn today. There is no doubt we will continue to the this Royal Heirloom for years to come.

  1. I read somewhere years ago that the Queen purchased this antique brooch for Princess Anne and that it is not a family heirloom. I can’t remember the source, sadly.
