The Wedding of Lord Louis Mountbatten (youngest son of the Marquess of Milford Haven (formerly Prince Louis of Battenberg) and Princess Victoria of Hesse) and the Hon. Edwina Ashley (daughter of Lord Mount Temple) at St. Margaret’s, Westminster in London on this day in 1922. The couple had two daughters, the 2nd Countess Mountbatten and Lady Pamela Hicks, and scandalized interwar society with their open marriage and numerous affairs. After both served with distinction during the Second World War, Lord Louis was created the last Viceroy of India, to handover power, and made Earl Mountbatten of Burma afterwards. Lord and Lady Mountbatten remained happily married until her death in 1960. He was assassinated by the IRA in 1979.

Royal Guests included King George V, Queen Mary, and Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom, and Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia, alongside most members of the British Royal Family, including the Prince of Wales (the Best Man), and Prince and Princess Andrew of Greece (sister of the groom), and their daughters (the bridesmaids).
