Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s Golden Wedding Anniversary

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are celebrating their Platinum (70th) Wedding Anniversary tomorrow! This year, they will mark the occasion privately and quietly. However, we are flashing back to their lavish Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebrations, which included a service at Westminster Abbey, lunch at the Guildhall, and most importantly for us: a Gala Concert at the Royal Festival Hall and a Ball at Windsor Castle.

On top of the entire British Royal Family, many European royals (both family and friends) were in attendance, including Princess Sophie (sister of the Duke of Edinburgh) and Prince George of Hanover, King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, the entire Greek and Spanish Royal Families, Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia, and Crown Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

After the service at Westminster Abbey, on the evening of November 20th, the actual anniversary, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh hosted a private ball at the recently restored Windsor Castle, which had caught on fire exactly five years before, on the Queen and Duke’s 45th Anniversary. No pictures were released of the event, but there was a special portrait by Andrew Festing and some of the royal guests were photographed arriving, including King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie of Greece, King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark, and King Michael and Queen Anne of Romania (who actually met at the 1947 wedding).

A new picture has been released to mark the Queen and Duke’s 70th Wedding Anniversary, taken by British photographer Matt Holyoak of Camera Press, were taken in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle in early November.
