Icelandic State Visit to Norway

President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and First Lady Eliza Jean Reid of Iceland are on their first State Visit to Norway from March 21st to 23rd, where they are guests of the Norwegian Royal Family. On Day 1, King Harald and Queen Sonja officially welcomed the Presidential Couple, attended a wreath-laying ceremony, hosted an official luncheon, and accompanied them on engagements throughout the day. In the evening, King Harald gave a gala dinner at the Royal Palace in honour of his guests. Continue reading

Funeral of Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg

The Funeral of Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg was held at the Evangelische Stadtkirche in Bad Berleburg, Germany on March 21st. Prince Richard, the husband of Princess Benedikte of Denmark and brother-in-law of Queen Margrethe of Denmark and Queen Anne Marie of Greece, died suddenly at Berleburg Castle in Germany on March 14th. The Norwegian Royal Family will be hosting President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson of Iceland later today. The programme promises a glittering State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Oslo this evening. In honour of the upcoming State Visit, we have been featuring State Banquets during past Icelandic State Visits to Norway. Norwegian Royal Tiaras

The Norwegian Royal Family will be hosting President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson of Iceland next week. The programme includes a glittering State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Oslo on the evening of the 21st. In honour of the occasion, and upcoming Norwegian Gala events, we are featuring all the glittering Royal Tiaras worn by the Queen Sonja, Crown Princess Mette Marit, and Princess Astrid. Ranging from Tiaras that are 200 years old to one not yet 20 years old, the Norwegian Royal Tiaras provide a wonderful snapshot of Norway’s history and its close links with its neighbors. Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Paris- Day 2

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge started their two-day Official Visit to Paris at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on March 17th. On Day 2, they met with veterans and victims of terror attacks at Les Invalides, visited the Musée d’Orsay, met with young people, and attended the France vs. Wales Six Nations Rugby Match. Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Paris

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge started their two-day Official Visit to Paris at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on March 17th. They met with the French President, attended a reception at the British Embassy, and attended a black-tie dinner in the evening. Earlier in the day, the Duke and Duchess attended the St Patrick’s Day Parade. It is their first Official visit to the French Capital. Continue reading

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at St Patrick’s Day Parade

The Duke of Cambridge, Colonel of the Irish Guards, was accompanied by the Duchess of Cambridge, on a visit to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade at Cavalry Barracks in Hounslow on March 17th. The Duke has attended the Parade every year since becoming Colonel in 2011. The Duke and Duchess will start an Official Visit to Paris later today. Continue reading

Royal Visit to Paris, 1938

On March 17th, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will start their two-day visit to Paris. In honour of the occasion, we at the Royal Watcher have been flashing back to previous royal visits to Paris. Today, for our final flashback, we will feature King George VI and Queen Elizabeth‘s infamous State Visit to Paris in July 1938. Originally scheduled for June, it was postponed to July after the Queen’s mother, the Countess of Strathmore, died five days before the start of the visit. The four day visit was extremely significant in the hostile environment of the late 30s. War with Nazi Germany was looming, the Royal visit to the French Capital needed to reinforce and solidify the friendship and Entente Cordiale between the two countries before WWII. This was also their first visit abroad after their accession to the Throne in December 1936. Continue reading
