Azeroth has never been short of rulers. Behind the walls of Stormwind, beneath the golden pyramids of Zuldazar, and in the ancient halls of Quel’Thalas, kings and queens have shaped the fate of entire peoples. Some were beloved leaders, some were feared tyrants, and some managed to become both during their remarkably eventful lives.

From a noble prince turned villain to the queen who ruled an empire beneath the sea, here are some of the most fascinating members of Azeroth’s royalty.

 

Arthas Menethil, The Lich King

Few royal figures in Warcraft have had a fall from grace quite as spectacular as Arthas Menethil.

Born the crown prince of Lordaeron, Arthas was raised to inherit one of the most powerful human kingdoms in the Eastern Kingdoms. He also trained as a paladin of the Silver Hand, seemingly destined to become the sort of noble ruler people could look up to. Unfortunately, things went downhill rather spectacularly.

When the Scourge plague threatened Lordaeron, Arthas became obsessed with stopping it at any cost. His search for a weapon powerful enough to defeat the undead eventually led him to Frostmourne, the cursed runeblade. Once he took up the sword, his descent into darkness was well underway. Arthas eventually killed his own father, destroyed his kingdom, and became the Lich King — a ruler whose ambition was no longer to protect his people, but to dominate the living and command the dead.

His story remains one of Warcraft’s most famous tragedies because, at its heart, it is the story of a prince who genuinely wanted to save his kingdom and ended up becoming its greatest nightmare.

 

Queen Azshara 

Ten thousand years ago, Azshara ruled the night elves from the magnificent city of Zin-Azshari. She was immensely powerful, incredibly influential, and famously convinced that she and her people were superior to everyone around them.

Then came the Sundering, the cataclysmic event that shattered the ancient night elf empire and tore Azeroth apart. Azshara survived the destruction of her kingdom by making a bargain with the Old God N’Zoth. The price was steep: she and her followers were transformed into naga, and their queen went on to build a new empire beneath the waves.

By the time the modern peoples of Azeroth encountered her again, Azshara was no longer simply an ancient queen. She had become the Empress of Nazjatar, ruling an underwater empire and plotting for centuries.

Azshara also acts as the final boss of the Eternal Palace raid and is considered one of the game’s most challenging encounters — the kind of fight where a WoW carry can come in handy. When the raid was released, Method, the guild that secured the World First victory over Queen Azshara, needed more than 300 attempts to finally bring her down. 

 

King Varian Wrynn 

As King of Stormwind, Varian was a warrior first and a politician second. His reign was marked by wars, personal tragedy, political tensions, and the constant threat of the Horde. Blizzard’s own stories portray him as a ruler who could be fiercely aggressive, particularly when the safety of his people was at stake.

Yet Varian was more complicated than the stereotypical battle-hungry king. He struggled with his own anger and with what it meant to protect a kingdom without allowing hatred to consume him. Even his acceptance of the worgen into the Alliance became part of that personal struggle.

His story ultimately ended at the Broken Shore, where he sacrificed himself during the Legion invasion, leaving Stormwind in the hands of his son, Anduin.

 

King Rastakhan 

While human kingdoms rose and fell, King Rastakhan ruled one of Azeroth’s oldest civilizations.

Blessed by the loa Rezan, Rastakhan sat upon the Golden Throne of Zuldazar, ruling the Zandalari Empire for more than two centuries. But longevity does not necessarily make a ruler untouchable.

As the Zandalari faced growing threats, Rastakhan turned to Bwonsamdi, the loa of death. The bargain gave the king formidable power, but it came at a price. During the Battle of Dazar’alor, Rastakhan was killed, and his soul passed into Bwonsamdi’s hands. Dying in his daughter’s arms, the king admitted that making the deal had been a mistake. After his death, the pact passed to Talanji, who inherited the throne and found herself drawn into her own uneasy relationship with the loa of death.

 

King Magni Bronzebeard 

Magni Bronzebeard is one of the most unusual kings in Azeroth. As a member of the Bronzebeard royal family, Magni eventually became King of Ironforge and one of the most respected leaders among the dwarves. His greatest adventure, however, began after his time on the throne took an unexpected turn. 

During the Cataclysm, Magni took part in an ancient ritual in an attempt to save the world, but the ritual turned him into a diamond, and for years, the former king was believed to be gone for good.

His story did not end there.

Magni was eventually awakened and discovered that he had become the planet’s Speaker, able to communicate with the world’s wounded spirit and sense the dangers threatening it. That makes him a rather fitting example of how strange royalty can get in Warcraft. Some kings inherit a crown, some lose one, and Magni ended up with something far more unusual: a direct line to Azeroth itself, acting as the voice of an entire world.
