Wedding of Lady Anne Spencer, 1944

Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret were among the guests at the Wedding of Lady Anne Spencer and Lieutenant Christopher Wake Walker at Westminster Abbey on this day in 1944, 80 years ago, which was the society wedding of the year, held during the Second World War.

Third Officer Lady Anne Spencer, WRENS, the daughter of 7th Earl and Countess Spencer, married Lieutenant Christopher Wake Walker, the son of Admiral Sir William Frederic Wake-Walker, 3rd Baronet, in a glamorous ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

The Wedding Ceremony was followed by a Reception at Admiralty House. The couple had three sons and two daughters, the eldest of whom was a goddaughter of the Queen Mother. Lady Anne and Captain Wake-Walker, who suffered from Parkinson’s until his death in 1998, resided in a 400-year-old house in East Bergholt in Suffolk. Lady Anne passed away in 2020.

Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret were in attendance at the society wedding of the season.
