The Greek and Spanish Royal Families hosted a spectacular Gala Dinner for Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina of Spain and Princess Alexia of Greece at the Zarzuela Palace on this day in 1983, 40 years ago!
King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain hosted the Gala Dinner to mark the Coming of Age of Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina and their passage into University.
Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina of Spain were joined by their cousin, Princess Alexia of Greece, the daughter of King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, with Royal Attendees including Crown Prince Pavlos and Prince Nikolaos of Greece, Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg, and Duke Philipp of Württemberg.

The Kings of Spain Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía offered a “youth dance” in the gardens of the Zarzuela palace to celebrate the end of the school years and the passage to the University of their daughters, the infantas Elena and Cristina, who at that time had 19 and 18 years old, respectively
This “youth party” was then joined by Princess Alexia, eldest daughter of Kings Constantine and Ana María of Greece
The party was attended by a group of friends and fellow students, Spaniards and foreigners, as well as young people from European royalty, such as Princes Paul and Nicolas of Greece, Willem of Luxembourg and Philip of Wurtenberg.
Not all the royalty were invited, but young people from some Royal Houses with whom the Infantas maintained great friendship.
In this way, the ball was presided over by Kings Juan Carlos and Sofía.
All the guests were formal dressed, the boys with tuxedos and the girls with long dresses. According to Palace sources, they did not want to call it a coming-of-age as the Princesses had already worn gala dresses at the weddings of the children of the Grand Dukes of Luxembourg or on the visit to Spain of the Kings of Sweden and the Grand Dukes.
Infanta Elena chose for that occasion an elegant long blue dress with a strapless neckline in the shape of a heart, adorned with a green sash. Her sister, Infanta Cristina, wore a pink dress, whose skirt was finished with two blue and fuchsia stripes. The last host, Princess Alexia chose a red dress with a strapless neckline and ruffles with a blue belt. All of them were combed with a similar style, wavy and voluminous half-length hair, in accordance with the tastes of the time.
