Countess of Frederiksborg’s Sapphire Necklace

Happy Birthday to the Countess of Frederiksborg, who turns 59 today! The former wife of Prince Joachim of Denmark, who remains close the the Danish Royal Family after their divorce, Countess Alexandra has retained the Alexandrine Drop Tiara, as well as other jewels she received during her marring, including this Sapphire and Diamond Necklace!

A striking necklace composed of a cabochon sapphire from which four sapphire and diamond fringes are suspended, this modern jewel has an unknown provenance and only appeared after the finalisation of her divorce in 2005, though she continued to be a Princess and a member of the Danish Royal Family until her remarriage in 2007. The necklace was either bought or could have been a piece loaned over a period of several months.

The Sapphire and Diamond Necklace first appeared on Princess Alexandra when she attended the Once Upon A Time Gala at the Parken Football Stadium in Copenhagen, as part of the Hans Christian Andersen Bicentenary Celebrations in 2005.

Later that year, Princess Alexandra wore the Sapphire and Diamond Necklace with the Alexandrine Drop Tiara for the spectacular Gala Concert to mark the Norwegian Independence Centenary in Copenhagen.

The following year, Princess Alexandra wore the Sapphire and Diamond Necklace at a State Banquet for the President of the Republic of Bulgaria at the  Amalienborg Palace, which was its last public appearance. Countess Alexandra has retained the Alexandrine Drop Tiara, and has worn it for several Royal Events but the Sapphire and Diamond Necklace has not been seen since.
