Engagement of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips, 1973

Buckingham Palace announced the Engagement of Princess Anne, the only daughter of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, and Lieutenant Mark Phillips on this day in 1973.

“It is with the greatest pleasure that the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh announce the betrothal of their beloved daughter the Princess Anne to Lieutenant Mark Phillips, the Queen’s Dragoon Guards, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Phillips.”

The engagement took place six weeks earlier, after horse trials at Badminton, in which the young couple competed. The announcement was made while the Royal Family was at Balmoral Castle, travelling to London the next day to appear in front of the press in the gardens of Buckingham Palace.

Princess Anne and Lieutenant Mark Phillips posed for several photographs taken by Norman Parkinson in the months before their Wedding in November 1973. The couple had two children before their divorce in 1992.

  1. Those photos of Princess Anne taken in the lead up to her wedding are some of my all time favourites of her.
