Queen Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee

In January, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will mark the 50th Anniversary of the Accession to the Danish Throne, after the Death of her father, King Frederick IX of Denmark in 1972. The Danish Royal Court has just announced a series of exciting events in mid-January to mark Queen Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee, which will also include many Foreign Royal Guests in addition to the extended Danish Royal Family. The Jubilee will also be marked with events in several places throughout the country, with a number of interviews, TV documentaries and book releases tell about her life and work.

The Danish Royal Court has released the updated schedule for Queen Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee:

May 21

  • Ballet Gala at the Tivoli Theatre
    • On Saturday 21 May, Tivoli marks the Queen’s 50th Government Anniversary with activities for guests in the garden and a ballet gala in the Concert Hall. Her Majesty will, among other things, visit the Pantomime Theater, the Tivoli Guard’s tailor and an anniversary tree will be planted in the middle of Tivoli. In the evening, dancers from, among others, the Hamburg Ballet, the Royal Ballet in London, the Paris Opera, the New York City Ballet and the Royal Ballet will perform in a ballet gala attended by the Queen and the Royal Family. The day in Tivoli ends with party fireworks.

June 3-4

  • Visit to Aarhus
    • The 3.-4. June concludes the year’s first summer trip with a two-day visit to Aarhus Municipality, where the municipality marks the Queen’s 50th Government Anniversary.

Summer

  • During the summer months, the French city of Cahors celebrates the Queen’s Government Anniversary and focuses on Denmark with several events, including two exhibitions, both called “Margrethe II de Danemark: artiste-Reine”. In the period of the city’s completely renovated Musée Henri-Martin, in the period 15 July 2022 – 5 March 2023, a total of 70 works, both paintings, watercolors and découpages, by the Queen will be displayed, while the city’s library, la médiathèque du Grand Cahors, will show the Queen’s vignettes Tolkien’s trilogy Lord of the Rings from July 15 -13. October 2022.

September 10

  • The Queen and the Royal Family will appear on the balcony of Christian IX’s Palace at Amalienborg in connection with the change of guard at 12.00
  • The Queen will in the carriage to Copenhagen City Hall, where there will be a celebration and official lunch, and the Queen will appear on the City Hall balcony.
  • In the evening, there will be a Gala Performance at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, with the Queen arriving in a carriage from Amalienborg with an escort of the Gardehus Regiment’s Horse Squadron. (Tiaras will be worn)

September 11

  • Festive Service in Our Lady’s Church in Copenhagen.
  • Lunch on the Royal Ship Dannebrog
  • In the evening, the Queen will hold a Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Palace for Foreign Royal Guests. (Tiaras will be worn)

September 23

  • The Queen will host an evening party for the Government, the Folketing and Danish members of the European Parliament, when there will also be an entertainment in the Knights’ Hall at Christiansborg Castle. (Tiaras will likely be worn)

UPDATE: The celebrations that should have taken place in mid-January 2022 will instead take place on September 10th and 11th, which will include the events at Copenhagen City Hall, the Gala Performance at the Old Royal Theatre, a service in Copenhagen Cathedral and the Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Castle. There will also be an opportunity to pay tribute to the Queen at a change of guard ceremony at Amalienborg Palace. The final program will be announced later this year. The events of January 14th will proceed as scheduled:

  • The Queen and Crown Prince begin the day with a Meeting at Christiansborg Palace.
  • The Queen, the Crown Prince Couple, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie and Princess Benedikte are present at the Folketing’s official celebration of the government anniversary.
  • Later the same day, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid’s grave at Roskilde Cathedral on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of King Frederik IX’s death.

UPDATE: Due to increasing safety concerns, the Jubilee Celebrations have been postponed to the late Summer, with new dates announced in the New Year. On January 14th, individual events will be attempted, including the Council of State, Reception in the Folketing and wreath-laying at Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid’s grave at Roskilde Cathedral. Further information will be announced at the beginning of the month.

January 10th

  • The Queen holds a press conference at Amalienborg.

January 13th

January 14th

  • The Queen and Crown Prince begin the day with a minister at Christiansborg Castle.
  • The Queen participates together with the Crown Prince Couple and Prince Joachim and Princess Marie in the Folketing’s celebration of the anniversary.
  • Later the same day, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid’s grave at Roskilde Cathedral on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Frederik IX’s death.

January 15th

  • The Queen and the Royal Family appear on the balcony of Christian IX’s Palace at Amalienborg in connection with the change of guard at 12.00
  • The Queen rides in the carriage to Copenhagen City Hall, where there will be a celebration and official lunch, and where the Queen will appear on the City Hall balcony.
  • The anniversary is marked in the evening with a Gala Performance on the Old Stage in the Royal Theater. The queen arrives for the festive evening in the carriage from Amalienborg with an escort of the Gardehus Regiment’s Horse Squadron. The party performance is broadcast by DR.

January 16th

  • Festive service in Our Lady’s Church in Copenhagen.
  • In the evening, the Queen holds a Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Castle, where the royal family, foreign guests and representatives of official Denmark participate. The gala tablet is broadcast by TV 2.

This celebration also takes the place of the events planned for her 80th Birthday last April, the lavish celebrations of which were cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic.

  1. The Golden Jubilee portraits of Queen Margrethe are wonderful, especially the one in close-up. She looks regal and approachable at the same time. The blue gown is lovely and the choice of the Pearl Poire tiara with its married parure is right on point. My only quibble is the position of the left hand in the standing portrait. It looks contracted, as if it were paralyzed. If she was holding a fan or something, the position would make sense. I just can’t understand how come the photographer didn’t notice something like that.
