The Queen (wearing the Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara, Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee Necklace and the Order of the Thistle) and the Duke of Edinburgh dance at the Royal Company of Archers Ball at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh on this day in 1966, during their annual stay at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, a tradition known as Holyrood Week. Founded in 1676, the Royal Company of Archers is a ceremonial unit that serves as the Sovereign’s bodyguard in Scotland.

The Queen will begin this year’s Holyrood Week later today, and will be joined by the Duke of Cambridge and the Princess Royal during her stay in Scotland.
