Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh have an Audience with Pope Pius XII at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City on this day in 1981, during their private Visit to Rome, while they were staying in Malta, where the Duke was stationed as a naval officer. They also attended a State Luncheon hosted by the Italian President at the Quirinal Palace. The Queen next visited the Vatican on a State Visit, almost 10 years later, in 1961, and later made another State Visit in 1980.

Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh also visited his cousin, Queen Helen of Romania, at the Villa Sparta near Florence, where they were joined by King Michael and Queen Anne of Romania and Princess Irene, Duchess of Aosta.
