Princess Elizabeth (acting as Aladdin) and Princess Margaret (taking the role of the Princess Roxana) star in the Christmas Pantomime of ‘Aladdin’ at Windsor Castle on this day in 1943, during the Second World War. Among the Guests in the audience was Prince Phillip of Greece, who was ‘rolling in the aisles at the appalling jokes.’ The Princess’ governess, Miss Crawford recorded: ‘I have never known Lilibet more animated. There was a sparkle about her none of us had ever seen before.’ The two Princesses acted in several annual Christmas Pantomimes at Windsor during the course of the War, and funds from the show went towards the Royal Household Wool Fund which provided comforts for the troops.
