Queen Alexandra’s Diamond Link Choker

Today marks the Anniversary of the Birth of Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom, the Danish Princess who was the longest-serving Princess of Wales and then a trendsetting Queen Consort, and to mark the occasion, we are taking a look at her Diamond Link Choker:

Consisting of a series of intersecting diamond links on a velvet band, the Choker originates from Queen Alexandra, who popularised the style to hide a scar on her neck. Queen Alexandra was notably pictured wearing the choker with her sister, Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia wearing her Sapphire Choker, in the 1890s.

After Queen Alexandra’s death, the Diamond Link Choker was inherited by her second daughter, Queen Maud of Norway, though because fashions had changed, it was not publicly worn until the 1980s, when Queen Sonja began wearing Chokers, which are her trademark pieces these days. Queen Alexandra’s Diamond Link Choker is worn quite frequently, most often at the annual Nobel Peace Prize Banquet, and also for many family events, like the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1997. There is no doubt we will continue to see the Diamond Link Choker worn for years to come!

  1. This is such an unusual choker! Queen Alexandra was quite inventive when it came to her chokers! It’s not my favorite style of necklace, but I must admit that this one is quite lovely!

    1. I had originally planned to publish this on the 95th anniversary of her death a few days ago, but thought it too unusual (I instead published an article on her Circlet)! It is quite a striking piece!

  2. It is definitely unusual, but I rather like this choker as it is a bit different from the typical rows of pearls or diamonds. So I am glad that the Queen of Norway is happy to wear it and I hope we will see many outings still yet to come!
