The British Royal Family host King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya of Nepal on their State Visit to Britain on this day in 1980, almost exactly 20 years after the State Visit of his father in 1960. The highlight of the visit was the magnificent State Banquet hosted by the Queen (wearing Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara and the Order of Ojaswi Rajanya) in honour of  King Birendra (wearing the Order of Nepal Taradisha and the Royal Victorian Chain) and Queen Aishwarya (in Queen Ratna’s Emerald Tiara and the Order of Nepal Pratap Bhaskara) at Buckingham Palace, which was also attended by the Queen Mother (wearing the Greville Tiara), the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (in the Cartier Indian Tiara), and Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester (wearing the Gloucester Honeysuckle Tiara).

King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya also hosted a Return Banquet in honour of the Queen (wearing the Vladimir Tiara and the Order of Ojaswi Rajanya) and members of the Royal Family at the Nepalese Embassy in London ahead of their departure. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh made a Return Visit to Nepal in 1986.
