The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were joined by Prince Edward, the then Sophie Rhys-Jones and a variety of friends and relatives including Lord and Lady Ivor Mountbatten and Alastair Bruce for the Holiday Cruise around the Western Isles of Scotland on board the Royal Yacht ‘Britannia’ on this day in 1995, which included a stop at the Castle of Mey to visit the Queen Mother, and ended in Aberdeen.

  1. In the last photo of this lovely gathering we can see Maj-Gen Alistair Bruce OBE VR DL, nowadays the Governor of Edinborough Castle; known to the Worldwide audience of Downton Abbey series as “the oracle,” another words the historical adviser.
