Funeral of King Alexander of Yugoslavia, 1934

The Burial of King Alexander of Yugoslavia in the Mausoleum of the Serbian Royal Family beneath St. George’s Church in Oplenac on this day in 1934, following a Funeral and Procession through Belgrade attended by many dignitaries, including King Carol of Romania (brother-in-law of the late King), Prince George, Duke of Kent, and led by Dowager Queen Maria, King Peter, Prince Regent Paul, and Princess Olga. The King had been assassinated in Marseille at the beginning of a State Visit to France, and his body was transported back to Belgrade through the port of Split in Croatia by the Yugoslav destroyer JRM Dubrovnik. The new King Peter II, who had just gone to study in in England the previous month, came back to Yugoslavia with his grandmother, Dowager Queen Marie of Romania.
