Prince Juan Carlos becomes Franco’s Successor, 1969

Prince Juan Carlos of Spain delivers a speech after being sworn in as the successor of Spanish Dictator General Francisco Franco in front of the Cortes Generales in Madrid on this day in 1969, becoming the ‘Prince of Spain’. After General Franco’s death in 1975, he was sworn in as the King of Spain, which marked the return of the Spanish Monarchy since 1931. King Juan Carlos dismantled the Francoist regime and was instrumental in Spain’s transition to democracy.
