The Funeral of Queen Mary at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on this day in 1953, following a lying-in-state at Westminster Hall, during which time 120,000 people filed past her coffin to pay their last respects. Royal Attendees included Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands, Crown Prince Olav of Norway (nephew), the entire British Royal Family, and the Queen (granddaughter), who paid her final respects by sprinkling earth three times from a silver bowl onto the coffin as the Archbishop of Canterbury declared her resurrection to eternal life with the words ‘Earth to Earth, Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust,’ followed by a deep curtsey.
