Accession of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia

Sultan Abdullah Ria’yatuddin Al Mustafa Billah Shah, The Sultan of Pahang was Installed as the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia), along with Tunku Azizah Aminah, the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang as the Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen) in a series of ceremonies influenced by the traditions of the Malay Royal states on January 31st. The appointment comes after the unprecedented Abdication of Sultan Muhammad V earlier this month (the first since Malaysia’s Independence in 1957), and the Accession of the new King Abdullah to the Sultanate of Pahang, after his ailing father’s Abdication. Malaysia is the world’s only rotational monarchy, where the Hereditary Rulers of Nine of the Malay States are elected as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) for a 5-year term by the Conference of Rulers. The new Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong are expected to reign until 2024.

The ceremonies started with the Sultan and Tengku Ampuan of Pahang (wearing the Pahang Tiara) arriving in Kuala Lumpur, where they were escorted in a Royal Procession to the Istana Negara at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim, where they were received by dignitaries including the Prime Minister. After the Arrival Honours, the King and Queen met the Sultans, Governors and Regents, and their consorts, before moving on to the Throne Room for the Installation Ceremony. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong and entered the Throne Hall leading a Procession followed by the Royal Regalia, Mace, Sword and Spear Holders, and the Grand Chamberlain, and starting with the Presentation of the Quran and the Regalia. Afterwards, the Prime Minister formally proclaimed the full enthronement of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, after which the Grand Chamberlain presented the Keris Panjang Diraja (Royal Long Keris), as the symbol of his royal authority. Then the Yang di-Pertuan Agong gave his Oath of Installation, followed by a congratulatory address by the Prime Minister, and then the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s first Speech from the Throne. This was followed by a Thanksgiving Prayer and a Royal Procession to mark the closing of the Ceremony.
