The Wedding of Don Alfonso, Duke of Anjou and Cadiz, son of Infante Jaime and Emmanuela de Dampierre and grandson of King Alfonso XIII of Spain, and Maria del Carmen Martinez-Bordiu y Franco (wearing the Franco Emerald Tiara), a granddaughter of General Franco, in the chapel of the El Pardo Palace in Madrid on this day in 1972. This was a unique match between a member of the former royal family and the dictatorship that succeeded them, just a few years before the monarchy was restored under King Juan Carlos. The couple had two sons and divorced in 1982.

Guests included the future King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, along with their children, Queen Fabiola of Belgium, Princess Christina (wearing Queen Sofia’s Pearl and Diamond Tiara), Princess Desiree (in Queen Louise’s Tiara), Prince Bertil, and Princess Lillian of Sweden (wearing her Laurel Wreath Tiara), Prince Rainer and Princess Grace of Monaco (in her Small Diamond Tiara), Begum Aga Khan, and the Duchess of Alba among a host of European, Asian, and African Royalty and Aristocracy.
