King Harald’s 70th Birthday

King Harald and Queen Sonja will be celebrating their 80th Birthday’s in a grand celebration this week in Oslo. Click HERE to read about the events and the guest list for this year. The celebrations started on the evening of February 21st, the King’s actual birthday. There was a gala dinner at the Akershus Fortress in Oslo for Norwegians. The entire royal family were present, but there were no foreign royal guests. The next evening, there was a private dinner for the foreign guests at Skaugum, the home of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

On February 23rd, there was a Gala Concert at the Oslo City Hall, which was attended by the Norwegian royal family and foreign royal guests.

Queen Sonja of Norway wore a stunning white gown with diamond earrings, a riviere, and a large diamond floral brooch (see below). King Harald wore Black Tie.

Princess Anne of the United Kingdom arrived (wearing a cape which has been called a horse blanket, but I personally like it) with her brother, the Earl of Wessex (in Black Tie). Later, she took of her cape to reveal a teal skirt and blazer, paired with aquamarine jewels. Her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, wore Black Tie.

The Duchess of Gloucester wore a red velvet gown with the pearls and emeralds given as a wedding gift to her mother-in-law. The Duke of Gloucester wore Black Tie.

Crown Prince (now King) Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands wore Black Tie. Then Crown Princess Maxima wore a black velvet gown with a fur lined jewels. She also wore emerald earrings, a large brooch and pendent, and a brooch in her hair.

After spending the day with outdoor activities, King Harald and Queen Sonja hosted a Banquet at the Royal Palace of Oslo. This Banquet was similar to the one there will be tomorrow.

Queen Sonja wore an olive skirt and brown top with the tiara, necklace, earrings, and brooch of the Norwegian Emerald parure, as well as the Order of St. Olav. King Harald wore White Tie with medals, honours, and the Order of St. Olav.
