Hanako, Princess Hitachi

Happy Birthday to Hanako, Princess Hitachi, who turns 80 today! The daughter of Count Yoshitaka Tsugaru and Hisako Mōri, Lady Hanako Tsugaru was born at the family home in Tokyo and educated at the Gakushūin (Peers School) in Tokyo, before majoring in Science at the Gakushūin Women’s College, graduating in 1961. In 1964, she married Prince Masahito of Japan, the younger son of Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako. Prince and Princess Hitachi have no children and have loyally served Japan over the decades. The Princess is a Member of the Imperial House Council, Honorary President of the Japan Ikebana Art Association, Honorary President of the Japan Animal Welfare Society, Honorary President of the Japan Equestrian Federation, Honorary President of the Nippon-Latin American Ladies’ Association, and the Honorary Vice-President of the Japanese Red Cross Society. She is also interested in animal welfare, particularly animal neglect., having translated many books from English into Japanese and having published five children’s books about animals. The proceeds from these books are donated to animal welfare causes. We wish HIH a very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!
