— RichardNixonLibrary (@NixonLibrary) January 26, 2017American President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon receive Prince Juan Carlos and Princess Sofia of Spain, then the Heirs of Fascist Dictator General Franco and later the King and Queen of Spain, at the White House in Washington, D.C. on this day in 1971. Events included an Official Welcome, Balcony Appearance, and a State Dinner hosted by the President in honour of Prince Juan Carlos (wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of Charles III) and Princess Sofia (in the Niarchos Ruby Parure, the Order of Charles III and the Order of Queen Maria Luisa).
King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia look so young and handsome in these photos! So much history was about to happen in both countries not too long after this visit, yet they seem totally unaware. Amazing!
