Installation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia

Sultan Abdullah Ria’yatuddin Al Mustafa Billah Shah, The Sultan of Pahang (celebrating his 60th Birthday) was Installed as the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia), along with Tunku Azizah Aminah, the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang as the Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen) in a series of ceremonies influenced by the traditions of the Malay Royal states on January 30th. The appointment comes after the unprecedented Abdication of Sultan Muhammad V earlier this year (the first since Malaysia’s Independence in 1957), and the Accession of the new King Abdullah to the Sultanate of Pahang, after his ailing father’s Abdication, followed by his Accession as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Malaysia is the world’s only rotational monarchy, where the Hereditary Rulers of Nine of the Malay States are elected as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) for a 5-year term by the Conference of Rulers. Gandik Diraja Tiara

Today, Malaysia is installing a new Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) and Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen), after the unprecedented Abdication of Sultan Muhammad V earlier this year, the first since Malaysia’s Independence in 1957, and the acession of Sultan Abdullah Ria’yatuddin Al Mustafa Billah Shah of Pahang and Tunku Azizah Aminah. As the world’s only rotational monarchy, where the Hereditary Rulers of Nine of the Malay States are elected as the King for a 5-year term, they also pass along some Crown Jewels, including this grand Tiara, the Gandik Diraja, which has been worn by all sixteen Queens since 1957, including the new Queen Azizah Aminah at the ceremony today! Coronation of the Sultan of Kedah

The State of Kedah has been hosting Royalty from Malaysia and Brunei this week, for a scene of glittering splendour surrounding the Coronation of the Sultan of Kedah, the first since 1959, who succeeded to the Throne last year. The Kingdom of Malaysia includes 9 Malay States with it’s own Hereditary Ruler, one of which is elected to serve as the ‘Yang di-Pertuan Agong’, King, for a period of 5 years. Continue reading
