Queen Lovisa’s Engagement Bracelet

Princess Louise of Sweden received this Gold and Pearl Bracelet from the future King Frederik VIII of Denmark upon their engagement in 1868, which was debuted by Queen Mary for the final New Year’s Levée at Christiansborg Palace yesterday.

A wide gold bracelet with eight square links, each set with one large pearl, surrounded by 16 diamonds, which is part of the jewelry in the Danish Royal Family’s Løsørefideikommis, was given to Princess Louise of Sweden by the future King Frederik VIII of Denmark upon their engagement on July 15, 1868.

As an engagement gift on July 15, 1868, Lovisa received a wide gold bracelet with eight square links, each set with one large pearl, surrounded by 16 diamonds.  Among the bracelets of the Løsørefideikommis are three gold bracelets that belonged to Queen Lovisa and were given by her husband, Frederik VIII, on very special anniversaries.

The Engagement Bracelet was among the jewels that Queen Lovisa transferred to the Danish Royal Family’s Property Trust (Løsøre Fideikommis) in 1910, and while it was not prominently worn by subsequent Queens, it was displayed at a few exhibitions.

Yesterday, Queen Mary debuted Queen Lovisa’s Engagement Bracelet at a New Year’s Levée for Officers from the Armed Forces, the National Emergency Management Agency, invited Representatives of large National Organizations, and Royal Patronage, at Christiansborg Palace.

Queen Mary paired Queen Lovisa’s Engagement Bracelet with Antique Diamond Earrings from Anne of Orange and a Diamond Brooch which is the central element of Queen Louise of Sweden’s Engagement Bracelet, which Queen Mary debuted at last year’s Levée. Let’s hope we see this royal heirloom worn again soon!

  1. I absolutely love how Queen Mary brings out these important and also sentimental pieces from their storage and make use of them. I wonder what she might surprise us with next!

  2. It’s lovely how gold suits her. I cant wait to see her wearing the gold tiaras in their vaults. I am also curious to see what she will do with the 8 identical brooches – I am sure she has some plans for them.

  3. As the others have said, it is exciting to see Mary delve into the vaults and wear historic jewels that have been “gathering dust” for decades! In the same way she has many of her gowns refashioned, she is showing how versatile these ancient jewels can be.
