Norwegian State Visit to Japan, 1983

The Japanese Imperial Family hosted King Olav V of Norway on his State Visit to Japan on this day in 1983, which was the first visit between the two countries since the end of the Second World War, when both nations fought on opposing sides. This State Visit was followed by the next Norwegian State Visit to Japan in 2001, while there was a Japanese State Visit to Norway in 2005.

An Official Welcome from Emperor Hirohito at the Imperial Palace, followed a State Banquet that evening hosted by the Emperor (wearing the Order of St. Olav) in honour of King Olav (in the Order of the Chrysanthemum). Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko (wearing her Diamond Scroll Tiara), Prince and Princess Hitachi, Princess Chichibu and Princess Takamatsu were also present.

Following a series of engagements, King Olav hosted a Return Banquet at the Akasaka Imperial Palace for the Japanese Imperial Family, which included Emperor Hirohito, Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko (in the Pearl Sunburst Tiara), Prince and Princess Hitachi, Princess Chichibu and Princess Takamatsu.
