Rex Catholicissimus ‘Their Most Catholic Majesties’ King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain (exercising her privilege du blanc, with a mantilla and peineta, her Wedding Earrings and the Order of Charles III) have an Audience with Pope John Paul II at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City on this day in 1981, during their State Visit to the Vatican. This was their second (and last) full dress State Visit to the Vatican, though both the King and Queen have visited the Vatican in an official and personal capacity numerous times over the years.
