Happy Birthday to Sophie Winkleman, Lady Frederick Windsor, who turns 40 today! The daughter of Barry Winkleman, publisher of the Times Atlas of World History, and the children’s author Cindy Black, she is the half-sister of television presenter Claudia Winkleman. Sophie was educated at the City of London School for Girls and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where she studied English Literature. before joining the Cambridge Footlights and writing and performing in the comic revue Far Too Happy, which toured Britain for three months and garnered the troupe’s first Perrier Award nomination in 20 years. She joined the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain in 1997, and as an actress, has appeared on the Stage, Radio, Television and Film, most notably as Princess Eleanor in The Palace. In 2009, Sophie married Lord Frederick Windsor, only son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, at Hampton Court Palace. Lord and Lady Frederik have two daughters and reside in London, being seen at most Royal Family events.

  1. So head scratcher question: I’m pretty good on peerage/titles but am curious why “Lady Frederick” and not “Lady Sophie”? Is that as she was not titled prior to marriage?

    1. In the UK, women take the titles of their husband unless they have a higher-ranking title! As the son of a Prince, her husband is Lord Frederick Windsor, and so as his wife, she takes the female form of his title, which is Lady Frederick (the same as a daughter-in-law of a Duke or a Marquess)! It’s just one of the oddities of the British title system!
